Cigarettes to be Sold in Plain Packets in Britain

Britain has decided to sell cigarettes in plain packets. There will be no color, logos or graphics on the packets. Only the name of the brand and the health warning will remain on the packet. This announcement is expected some time in this week, most probably Wednesday which is the National No Smoking Day. England would be the first European country to undertake this move.

The main aim is to make smoking less alluring to teenagers. It is estimated that about 200,000 teens take up smoking each year. It is thought that the generic packaging will make cigarettes less attractive to people.

Health Hazards of Smoking Cigarettes
Smoking causes many diseases and affects the overall health of smokers.

Research chief for delighted anti-smoking crusaders Ash, Amand Sandford said, "Standard plain packs would take the glamor away. You'd just get addicted smokers buying them - not new generations."

Australia and the European Parliament in Brussels are planning to follow suit.
