Children’s’ Toys Have High Levels of Harmful Carcinogens
An Oakland based environmental group has warned that children toys sold by some of the biggest retailers contain harmful levels of a banned carcinogen which may put the children’s health at risk.
According to Center for Environmental Health, toys and furniture sold by major retailers, such as Amazon, Walmart and Toys R Us, contain banned carcinogen such as flame retardant chlorinated Tris. Chlorinated Tris has been added as a cancer causing carcinogen by the Californian government last year which also made it mandatory to put up warning messages on products that contained the chemical.

Center for Environmental Health revealed that it had purchased over 19 different products from the retailers after the state deadline to display the messages had passed. It found that the levels of the chemical in most of the products ranged from 3 percent to 6 percent while the level was more than 10 percent in one rocking chair.

“You can say, 'Maybe I'll luck out and go to the store and get a product that doesn't have this chemical in it. But on the other hand, we found enough products that do contain chlorinated Tris that we would like to get this problem taken care of. I don't want anybody to have to worry when they need to go buy a crib mattress for their kids”, research director Caroline Cox said.
