Childhood Obesity Rate Spiraling Out of Control in Britain

The obesity rate in children is almost twice as fast in Britain compared to their American counterparts, a new report reveals.

According to Datamonitor, Britons are spending more on unhealthy snacks than Americans and more than 30 percent of British children between 5 to 13 years of age are already overweight. The research company added that the figures will increase by an annual rate of 2.1 percent in the next four years compared to 1.3 percent in the United States.

An average Briton spends more than £73 on snacks such as chips and ice creams compared to £39.51 among Americans.

However a spokesman for Food and Drink Federation, which represents all of the companies that manufacture such snacks, rejected the study claiming that the latest government figures has shown that the rate of obesity has "leveled off".

"We agree that childhood obesity levels are still too high in the UK and we look forward to working in partnership with the new Government on any initiatives designed to help consumers of all ages lead healthier lives", he added.
