Chennai to Get Molecular Imaging Centre

The Bangalore based HealthCare Global Enterprises (HCG) and GE Healthcare said they would set up a molecular imaging centre here to address the growing oncology needs of the region.

Their first such centre was opened in Bangalore in June. The Chennai centre will cater to patients from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, the company said.

Molecular imaging is a combination of fields such as biology, medicine, pharmaceutics, physics, chemistry and engineering that allows physicians to detect, treat and monitor disease at the body's cellular levels. Molecular imaging and scanning capabilities make multi-medical therapy possible.

'The molecular imaging centre in Bangalore has received tremendous response from patients across Karnataka,' Ajai Kumar, Chairman, HealthCare Global Enterprises said here.

'We have successfully diagnosed and treated about 300 patients since the opening of the Bangalore facility in June. Through this technology, we can offer a definitive diagnosis that can help the patient avoid unnecessary painful procedures,' he added.

HCG plans to set up multiple oncology centres across India with centres of excellence at strategic locations, the company said. These centres will house complete molecular imaging and cancer treatment facilities and will provide material and technical support to smaller oncology centres.

The Chennai facility will have some of the most advanced set of cancer and cardiac disease detection tools. It will house a high-capacity cyclotron from GE.

'Molecular imaging has huge potential to enable detection of diseases at a much earlier stage and change the way we manage the patient today,' said V. Raja, president and chief executive officer, GE Healthcare South Asia.
