Chennai Hospital Trains ENT Doctors from Africa

An Indian hospital in Chennai is giving training to ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists from several African nations.

The K.K.R. ENT Hospital and Research Institute this week ended their first training programme with 50 ENT surgeons from several West African countries, including Nigeria.

The programme was initiated following a similar programme in Lagos in June this year, where Ravi Ramalingam, the managing director of the institute, and his team of experts trained African ENT surgeons on ear and sinus surgeries.

The Indian doctors conducted their training at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, which has the largest university campus in western Africa.

"We taught them how to conduct tests and to treat common infections of ear and nose," Ramalingam said.

Impressed by the work of Indian doctors, the Nigerian university proposed a continuous training programme, through which African physicians and ENT experts could come to Chennai for training.

"We will be offering a regular fellowship programme for these doctors at K.K.R. ENT Hospital and Research Institute in Chennai, free of charge", Ramalingam told IANS.

The programme will also benefit countries in other parts of Africa like Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Burundi and Zanzibar.
