Chemists To Stage Nationwide Strike Against Online Sale Of Medicines
A day-long strike has been organized by the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) on October 14. The strike has been called urging the Center and the State Government to impose ban on online sale of medicines. Nearly 40,000 pharmacies will be shut on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu.
The AIOCD said that online sales of drugs would be harmful to people’s health and safety and the quality of medicines would go unchecked.

T Natarajan, General Secretary of Chennai District Chemists and Druggists Association, said, “While booking medicines on the net, one is not sure whether all rules are followed in keeping these medicines in cold storage as mandated under the Act.”

Some websites are selling drugs in violation of the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules, 1940, added Natarajan.

The online sales of medicines will affect eight lakh chemists across India. As a result of online sales, fake drugs could also enter the market. It is dangerous to sell medicines without prescription said AIOCD.
