Chandigarh Achieves TFR of 2 Children Per Couple
A report released by Union ministry of health, government of India has said that Chandigarh has achieved a total fertility rate (TFR) of two children per couple. This target was achieved well before 2010, which was the deadline set by the National Population Policy.

"Chandigarh has scored the golden goal before the final whistle has been blown," the report said, adding that Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and two union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Pondicherry had also achieved the target.

A spokesperson for the UT administration in Chandigarh said the target was achieved thanks to efforts to promote acceptance and usage of the family planning methods among the population. He added that some 86% of the population was aware and accepted various methods of contraception.

However the report was critical of states like Bihar, UP and MP, saying they could take another decade to achieve the target.
