Caterpillar Forces a Three-Year-Old to Undergo Four Surgeries in the Eye

A little girl who was playing happily in her grandmother’s garden in Navi Mumbai had to face a nightmare-like incident, unfortunately.

While she was playing, a caterpillar suddenly fell into Vedika Sandecha’s eye causing unbearable pain and irritation.

The three-year-old girl was immediately rushed to a nearby clinic where the doctor saw around 150 hair strands lodged into her eye. She was immediately given anesthesia and 60% of her hair was pulled out surgically. But the doctor was not able to pull out the rest leaving Vedika with agonizing pain.

Her parents were asked to consult an eye specialist, Dr.Girija Suresh at Fortis Hospital in Mulund. The surgeon performed three surgeries and removed nearly 30 hair strands from the lower lid and around 10 from the upper one.

"Foreign bodies like stiff caterpillar hair, which are not visible to the naked eyes, have tendency to get lodged deep inside the eye and can cause a lot of agony to the patient. Our challenge increased multifold as we were dealing with a three-year-old old patient," Dr. Girija said.

The operation took around one and half hours and was performed under general anesthesia with an operating microscope. The girl has recovered fully after a few days.

"The condition caused by caterpillar hair in eyes is known as Caterpillar Hair-Induced Ophthalmitis (CHIO), which is inflammation of eyes caused due to friction with the hair strands. This condition is not reported very frequently. The treatment for this condition involves removal of hair with the use of fine forceps," added Dr. Girija.
