Cardiologists Encourage People To Lead Healthy Lifestyle To Prevent Heart Disease In India
Doctors at that Columbia Asia Hospital in Pune encouraged people to sign a pledge ‘to take care of their hearts’ as part of the World Heart Day that was observed on September 29. A prevention drive was launched to fight the cardiovascular disease epidemic that India is facing.
Nearly 250 people signed the pledge to do their best to lead healthy lifestyle and quit bad habits to reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The hospital also encouraged people to get preventive heart screenings by offering special week-long discounts.

In India, cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 26 percent of the deaths. Tobacco is the major risk factor for the disease. Cardiologists joined hands to demand immediate implementation of 85 percent pictorial warnings on tobacco packs as a measure to save millions of people from the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases in India.

According to an international report published by the Canadian Cancer Society in 2014, India is currently ranked 136th worldwide vis-à-vis warnings labels, said Professor K Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India and also the honorary president of HRIDAY.
