Leading heart surgeons in Britain have called on the NHS to undergo a culture change by introducing performance data of individual doctors and said that such a move could cut down death rates by more than 50 percent. According to a report released by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery, the death rates among those patients who underwent heart surgery fell by 50 percent when data and information about what happened before and after surgery was made public.
The report went on to add that the collection of performance data of all the doctors also saw an overall improvement among the doctors with 99 percent of whom were performing above the satisfactory level.
“This data improves the quality of care for patients, and better quality care actually comes at a lower cost to the NHS. Society is also changing, people are looking for all sorts of information, and they will demand more of this type of information in the future. The profession needs to start responding to that in order to keep its level of trust with patients”, lead author Dr Ben Bridgewater said.
