Buildings Damaged, Teenager Missing in 7.0 Earthquake That Jolted East Indonesia
Indonesia falls within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide with each other and cause frequent seismic and volcanic activity. A powerful earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, has struck remote eastern Indonesia in the early hours of July 28, 2015. The tremors have damaged several buildings and a teenage boy is missing, after he fell into a river.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake hit inland in a mountainous area of Papua, almost 250 kilometers west of the province's capital Jayapura at a depth of 52 kilometers. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, disaster agency spokesman, said, "The quake was felt 'very strongly' for four seconds and prompted residents to panic and rush out of their homes. Rescuers are still trying to reach the area closest to the epicenter in Memberamo district, which could take several hours."

Both Indonesian authorities and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center assured that there was no threat of any tsunami waves from this temblor.
