Britain’s First Voicebox Transplant to Take Place Soon
The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) in Britain has given the go-ahead signal for performing the country’s first voicebox transplant which could be carried out in the next few months.
Experts at RCS assessed the surgery, with the United States performing two such transplants, and gave approval for the surgery to be conducted in Britain. The surgery will beneficial for those who struggle to swallow, speak or breathe as their larynx has been destroyed either due to a disease or through accident.

University College London’s Professor Martin Birchall is expected to lead the team that will perform the first surgery once the patients and donors are matched.

“We have been working on this for a long time and this report gives us the green light to go ahead. It also gives us guidance on aspects such as psychological assessment. It is an incredibly balanced report. We have a couple of patients who would be good recipients, and this news will lead to more referrals”, he said.
