Brit Teen Undergoes Tongue Surgery to Learn Korean Language

A British teenager was so desperate to learn Korean that she underwent a surgery to increase the length of her tongue in order to help her pronounce Korean words better.

Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones, 19, wants to study Korean and live in South Korea. When she signed up for Korean classes, she found that she was unable to pronounce some words properly. This was due to her having a shorter than normal tongue “caused by unusually thick lingual frenulum – the flap of skin that joins the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.”

Developmental Disturbances of the Tongue
Tongue is the only muscle that is attached to only one end. The abnormalities of the tongue include tongue disease, tongue tie and size-related anomalies.

Her parents then agreed for her to undergo a 15-minute surgery involving incision in the flap of skin and now her tongue is 1cm longer than before, allowing her to easily pronounce words that she was having trouble with.

“I'd been learning Korean for about two years, and my speaking level was high, but I was really struggling with particular sounds. The surgical procedure was my only option. My pronunciation was very 'foreign', but now I can speak with a native Korean accent”, she said.
