Brighton City Council Set To Become First In The UK To Ban Smoking On The Beach

Brighton beach, one of the most famous in the UK could become smoke-free if plans to extend the current ban in the seaside resort get go-ahead.

Brighton and Hove City Council is to decide whether to hold a consultation on a proposal to make outdoor public spaces smoke-free. If agreed, the consultation period will start from July 22 for 12 weeks.

Tougher Smoking Ban for British Columbia Smokers
Smokers might as well kick the butt. There will be no escape into outdoor areas in eateries or distant patios, as the newly to- be- released bill of British Columbia hits the public.

Brighton has already banned smoking in children’s play areas, but now the city parks and beaches could become smoke-free too.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of health charity Ash (Action on Smoking and Health) said, “A growing number of local authorities and other organizations are exploring ways of providing more smoke-free public places in response to public demand."

“Smoke-free beaches could provide a safe and pleasant environment, particularly for children, but also for adults who want to avoid exposure to second-hand smoke, as well as reducing the amount of cigarette butt litter on beaches, which does not degrade quickly and is harmful to wildlife.”
