Bribes for Jobs Scandal Unearthed in Hasan

In a fresh embarrassment to the Karnataka state government, a number of people filed complaints with the Hassan Town police station claiming that they are being asked to pay bribes if they want a job at a government hospital.

According to one of the complainant, S S Prabhakar, people are being asked to pay bribes worth Rs 1.25 lakhs if they want a technician's post while a storekeeper's job costs around Rs 1.8 lakhs. Prabhakar went on to claim that a number of high level people in the government are behind the scam and has named medical education minister Ramachandra Gowda's personal assistant Virupaksha as one of the accused.

While some of them refuse to pay bribes, others do. However it is not enough to be assured of a job. Says Krishnaiah Shetty, who paid Rs 2.5 lakh to executive officer L Jayaram, "I paid Rs 2.5 lakh to executive officer L Jayaram as bribe. I didn't get the job and hence asked him to pay me back. He paid me back Rs 1.5 lakh in cash."

So far the chief minister B S Yeddyurappa cancelled the appointment of 387 staff, all C and D group employees, in Mysore and Hassan medical colleges and has appointed additional chief secretary Abhijit Das Gupta to initiate an inquiry.
