Breast Implants may Need to be Rechecked

Women who have Poly Implant Protheses or PIP breast implants may need to get them rechecked

Women who have Poly Implant Protheses or PIP breast implants may need to get them rechecked after a French inquiry found that they contain an unapproved substance and may even rupture due to lack of barriers.

It is estimated that some 50,000 British women may have had these implants. Surgeons have warned that women may need to get checked up within six months of having the implant.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) advised that they may also need to get the implant removed should an ultrasound show that it is leaking.

"This is certainly an unusual situation but so far there is no serious cause for alarm - whilst further tests are conducted into the substance, we recommend that women who've undergone breast augmentation contact their surgeons to find out what type of implant was used," said BAAPS president Nigel Mercer

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had ruled in March that PIPs should not be implanted and any remaining stock should be returned to the manufacturer.
