Brain Dead Kochi Teen's Heart and Lungs Airlifted to Chennai for Transplantation

A 19-year-old boy’s heart and lungs was airlifted from Kochi to Chennai to be transplanted to a patient at Fortis Malar Hospital.  A Deccan Charters special flight carried the organs to the Chennai from Nedumbassery airport in Kochi.

Pranav (19), hailing from Kayamkulam was declared brain dead after a road accident. The organs were harvested by a team of doctors at Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi.

The heart and lungs were rushed to the Nedumbassery airport, situated 34 kilometers away from the hospital. Police created a green corridor (all signals remained green) to transport the organs through an ambulance from the hospital to the airport. Control room vehicles were posted at all major traffic points on the NH 47.

 By creating a similar green corridor the organs were transported from Chennai airport to Fortis Malar Hospital at Adyar, situated 12km away. The distance was covered in 10 minutes and the surgery had started immediately on a 24-year-old man from Maharashtra.

This is not the first time an interstate transplant had taken place in the hospital. On September 3 last year, the heart of a 32-year-old woman from BGS Global Hospitals in Bengaluru was airlifted to Chennai and successfully transplanted to a patient at this hospital.

Similarly on December 19, the heart of a two-year-old brain dead boy was airlifted from Bengaluru and successfully transplanted to a two-and-a-half-year old patient from Russia, who was undergoing treatment at Fortis Malar Hospitals.
