Bodybuilder Dies Aged 20 After Taking Anabolic Steroids to Keep in Shape
Fitness fanatic Oli Cooney succumbed to a lifestyle that included taking anabolic steroids in order to keep in shape for weightlifting, an inquest has heard.
The Bradford inquest heard that Mr Cooney, of Baildon, was taking steroids since he was 16. He stopped taking them at age 19 after he was admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary with chest pains, but by then chronic heart disease had set in.

He also suffered two heart attacks and three strokes, but responded well to physiotherapy and continued working out despite warnings from doctors. He collapsed on September 22 last year while running after a taxi. Mr Cooney’s mother Sarah Cooney said her son was suffering with body dysmorphic disorder, “How can you think going to the gym is dangerous? When somebody is anorexic they stop eating and you know it’s bad, but at what point do you think your boy’s obsession with fitness is unhealthy?” she asked.

Assistant coroner Dominic Bell ruled that his death was from substance abuse of anabolic steroids.
