Blame Your Genes for Bone Disease
A new study by the University of Western Australia School of Medicine and Pharmacology and the Centre for Medical Research have discovered a link between genetics and the risk of developing bone disease. After 10-years of research the scientists have found several new genes which are responsible for the inheritance of Paget's disease, a bone condition that affects 5% people over 55-years.
These newly found genes are important for bone health. Some of them play a crucial role in bone metabolism, while others are involved in bone regulation. These genes seem to interfere with other bone diseases including osteoporosis and bone cancer.

Researchers feel that the breakthrough could lead to genetic profiling to identify people at risk of developing Paget's disease. This research could also pave the way for breakthroughs in other areas. However, the researchers have expressed the need for further studies to find out exactly how the genes are linked.

The research has been published in Nature Genetics.
