 Beware of Dengue
Even though most people believe that dengue is more common in rural areas because of the poor sanitary conditions there, experts say urban dwellers have more to worry about.

"These mosquitoes are short-distance flyers and can only fly a distance of up to 50 to 100 metres. The denser the population is in an urban area, the easier it becomes for the mosquitoes to fly around in the neighbourhood and bite people," says Ridzuan Ismail, director of R&D and Entomology Research Centre, Fumakilla Malaysia Berhad.

He added that mosquitoes find great breeding habitats in areas where construction is ongoing and houses are unoccupied.

Ridzuan says it is vital for homeowners to check their surroundings and keep them free of stagnant water so as to stop these mosquitoes from breeding. "Scrubbing is important because the Aedes egg can live without water for up to six months. As such, only scrubbing will destroy the egg and prevent it from hatching," he added.

In order to prevent mosquitoes from invading homes, it is important to use mosquito liquid or mosquito mats use inside the home so that it provides a continuous, ashless and smokeless protection against mosquitoes.
