Better Policing may Prevent 100,000 Crimes Per Year
Having stricter jail terms for criminals and integrating better policing methods could prevent more than 100,000 crimes every year, a new report by a British think tank reveals.
According to the report published by social policy think-tank Civitas, just one additional month of jail term could prevent over 10,000 burglaries and frauds every year while making sure that convicted criminals serve two-thirds of their jail sentences, instead of just half, could see the number of crimes fall by 30,000.

The report is in direct contradiction to Justice Secretary Ken Clarke who had claimed that there was no link between tougher punishment and fall in crime and instead said that long jail sentences increased the risk of fueling future crime. The Ministry of Justice has predictably rejected the Civitas report, claiming it to be “simplistic and flawed”.
