Best Way to Boost Math Skills in Children
This piece of news may allay the concerns of parents with respect to helping children improve their mathematical abilities.

When young children are trained in spatial reasoning it can give a boost to their performance in math, said scientists from Michigan State University.

During the study, researchers trained 6- to 8-year-olds in mental rotation and spatial ability. This improved their scores in addition and subtraction problems markedly.

Earlier research also showed a connection between spatial reasoning and math, and this study shows that when children improved in one area, it benefited their performance in other fields as well.

Scientists felt that spatial training helps them tackle calculation problems. "What's shocking is that we saw these improvements in math performance after giving the students just one 20-minute training session in spatial ability. Imagine if the training had been six weeks."

Researchers also said that early intervention in elementary grades helped children achieve better results in math and this ability will later on reflect on their performance in other fields such as engineering and architecture.
