Berries can Improve Effectiveness of Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology suggests that berries could be effective in improving treatment for pancreatic cancer.
The study was conducted by researchers at King's College Hospital and the University of Southampton who found that an extract of chokeberry was effective in killing off the cancer cells, probably through a process known as apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

The researchers said that they concentrated on pancreatic cancer as it has one of the worst prognoses of all cancers, with less than five percent of patients alive five years after their diagnosis.

“These are very exciting results. The low doses of the extract greatly boosted the effectiveness of gemcitabine, when the two were combined. In addition, we found that lower doses of the conventional drug were needed, suggesting either that the compounds work together synergistically, or that the extract exerts a "supra-additive" effect. This could change the way we deal with hard to treat cancers in the future”, University of Southampton’s Bashir Lwaleed said.
