Bank Left Red-Faced After Mistaking Masked Cancer Patient for Bank Burglar
A Wells Fargo Bank branch in California called in the police after mistaking a cancer patient wearing a surgical mask to be a robber.
The FBI had recently issued an alert for the ‘Surgical Mask Bandit’ who had robbed at least two banks in Orange County. When Joe Jaramillo, who had undergone chemotherapy the previous day and was wearing a mask to fight germs, entered the bank to make a withdrawal, the bank authorities assumed him to be the robber and called in the police.

Jaramillo said that he thought the bank teller was dragging on the transaction in order to give the police time to arrive and when they did, they asked him to stand up and put his hands on his head and searched his car and questioned him, before realizing their mistake and apologizing to him.

“The next thing I know, I have six Montebello police officers around me, standing there saying, ‘Can you stand up, can you put your hands above your head’?’ What did I do? ‘Can you please stand up, sir?’ I go, ‘Really?’ This is so embarrassing, you have all these people at the bank [watching]. I felt so embarrassed and humiliated”, Jaramillo said.
