Bangladesh has decided to set up 10 HIV/AIDS diagnosis laboratories and counselling centres.

Bangladesh has decided to set up 10 HIV/AIDS diagnosis laboratories and counselling centres in various hospitals as HIV cases are on the rise in the country.

The decision was announced at the second meeting of the National Safe Blood Transfusion Council here Wednesday, local news agency UNB reported.

The meeting, chaired by health advisor Major General (Retd.) Matiur Rahman, also approved the national blood policy, said a press release.

The meeting decided to establish a national blood transfusion centre, which will be a referral organisation for all blood transfusion centres, including the country's 98 existing safe blood transfusion centres.

The health advisor said the Safe Blood Transfusion Law 2002 was formulated to check blood-borne viruses of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and Malaria.

"There is also a provision in the law to ensure proper and optimum use of blood," he said.
