Awake Brain Surgery in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Khalifa Medical City has put itself on the map of world medicine after becoming the first hospital in the region to conduct a complicated and rare awake brain surgery.

The surgery, conducted on a 38-year old Indian male, was led by Dr Maher Mansour who is a consultant neurosurgeon with the hospital. Dr Mansour said that the decision to conduct such a surgery was taken after CT scans and MRIs revealed that the tumor was situated in the area of the brain which controls vocalization and speech.

“The surgery for this 38-year-old patient was conditioned by the risk of a post-operative effect called aphasia, or the inability to speak. For that reason, it was indicated to do this procedure with the patient awake, in order to assess him while we do electrical stimulation on the region we wanted to remove, ensuring that no cells from the normal brain is removed,” Dr Mansour said.

The surgery lasted for six hours and the patient was discharged without any problems after spending 10 more days for observation.
