Australia's Record-breaking Organ Transplants

Last year, 2010, had been a landmark year in Australia, as the number of life-saving organ transplants reached a new high, setting a record in the country.

The donor and transplant figures released by Australian and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry (ANZOD) and the Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) reveal that 309 donors and their families had helped 931 people get an improved quality of life.

Since the early times, the novel idea of transplanting tissues and other body parts from one organism to the other has captured the imagination of successive generations.

The Australian Government had allocated $151 million for its national reform program over a period of four years to encourage organ and tissue donation. A new network of clinical staff and an advertising campaign, DonateLife, that encouraged potential organ donors to talk to their families impacted organ donation last year.

Tasmania had the highest outcome with 19.7 donors per million. The most commonly transplant organ during 2010 was the kidney (548 transplanted) followed by the liver, lung then heart.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King said, "I want to pay tribute to those Australians who have donated organs. They have left a living legacy.”
