Tasmanina MP Jodie Campbell has been assaulted by her partner. The incident has created ripples in Australia. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and others have denounced the attack.
The MP's boyfriend, 36-year-old Roland Kurt Small, punched her, twisted her fingers and hit her in the stomach, police said.
He was produced before a court, but he did not enter a plea. He will reappear in court next month. He has been released on bail.
Ms Campbell has confirmed that she went to hospital yesterday with bruising and abrasions and was later discharged.
A spokeswoman from her office says she is recovering with friends and family.
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he is deeply troubled by the alleged assault.
Mr Rudd says he has spoken to Ms Campbell to offer his support.
"I spoke with her last night and had a long chat with her and she's in good spirits despite the great trauma that she's been through," he said.
"I was keen to say to her very clearly that just not myself but all members of the Parliamentary Labor Party are in complete and absolute support of her at this very, very difficult time."
Speaking more broadly, Mr Rudd said: "Acts of violence against women are cowardly acts by men and have no place, no place, in modern Australia."
"That's why I've said time and time and time again that the only attitude we can have to this sort of violence is a policy of zero tolerance."
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon told reporters the government was working to increase support for victims.
"The general point that violence is never accepted is something that the government takes very seriously, as you have seen from our investment already in the 18 months that we have been in government, to make sure that women can get the support they need if they have been victims of violence.''
The Federal Opposition leader Malcolm Turnbulll has also offered his party's support.
"It's a very tough situation," he said.
"She's been hurt and we wish her a speedy recovery and she has our thoughts and prayers and our love and best wishes at this very rugged time for her."
