Indian Artist Creates Sand-art to Raise Awareness About Nepal Earthquake Victims
To raise awareness about the Nepal earthquake on Saturday, sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik created a sand-art piece with the slogan, "help the earthquake victims".
"The earthquake is very sad news for the world. Anyone who watches the scenes on television would feel terrified. I appeal to everyone throughout the globe to come forward and help the victims of Nepal. We are trying to send this message through our sand art," said Patnaik. "We get a lot of tourists here and that is why we have created this sand-art piece, to spread awareness about the disaster."

The world renowned artist used about five tons of sand to create the sculpture with intricate details and hopes that his sculpture would encourage people from all over the world to step forward and help victims of the earthquake in Nepal and India.

Puri beach is a prime tourist hot spot during the summer months.

Earlier in the day, a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitudes hit east of Pokhara in Nepal, around half way between the town and the capital Kathmandu. The earthquake was 31 km deep and tremors were felt as far as New Delhi and other northern cities in India.

The death toll in Nepal from the powerful earthquake has reportedly risen to 1100.
