Artificial Testicles to Address Male Infertility

A San Francisco fertility clinic has revealed that it has received a grant from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to develop artificial testicles to tackle male infertility. The director of the clinic, Dr Paul Turek revealed that he and his team will be attempting to develop an artificial testicle that will produce real sperms. Dr Turek said that while using stem cells to treat infertility among animals has been done, it is yet to be tested in humans.

According to the news report in My Health News Daily, Dr Turek has said that he has received a grant from the government to develop a “sperm-making biological machine”. Writing on his website, Dr Turek revealed that the machine will not be shaped as a real testicle but instead will designed as a cylindrical bag a few inches in length.

“To be clear, this grant is not about creating a testicular implant for a man who is missing a real one. We did that a decade or so ago. This award is to develop a sperm making biological machine. We now have a couple of years to create human artificial sperm in a dish, or more formally, a 'bioreactor,' a fancy dish to be sure”, he said.
