The woman was reportedly working for an American aid-contracting firm, Development Alternatives Inc (DAI), which has offices throughout the world.

The group was travelling between Asabad, the provincial capital and Jalalabad, in two vehicles, when they were abducted. They wanted to attend the opening of a canal refurbishment project in the Narang district of Kunar, the paper said.

DAI is one of the many large aid-contracting companies operating in Afghanistan and employs a large number of overseas staff.

A spokesman for the company confirmed that a number of their personnel were involved in the suspected abduction but declined to give any further details.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office added: "We can confirm that a British national is missing in Afghanistan. We are working with other international agencies to urgently investigate these reports."

In July a British security guard was killed as he defended a DAI compound from attack in the northern province of Kunduz. Besides, another British doctor, Karen Woo, was murdered in the country last month.
