Americans Say Mental Health Issues Cause Mass Shooting, Not Inadequate Gun Laws
About 63% of Americans believe mass public attacks like the one at UCC reflect problems identifying and treating people with mental health problems rather than inadequate gun control laws.
The Umpqua Community College shooting took place on October 1, 2015 at the UCC campus near Roseburg, Oregon, United States. Christopher Harper-Mercer, 26, fatally shot an assistant professor and eight students in a classroom. Nine other students were injured.

Only 23 % of Americans believe such attacks show the need for more gun control. These results are provided by the Washington Post-ABC News poll released on October 26, 2015.

The same poll found those wanting to protect gun rights edged out those asking for new laws. Two years ago, a poll showed that 52% majority prioritized new laws over gun rights.

Most mass shooters exhibited signs of mental illness, but Democrats and anti-gun liberals are preoccupied with only expanding background checks-or calling for the repeal of the Protection Of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
