Ambition Overcame Professionalism of Heart Specialist Dr Joe Motwani

The General Medical Council heard today that Dr Joe Motwani, who gained worldwide reputation for his pioneering heart surgeries to unblock clogged arteries, allowed ambition to overcome his professional attitude in some cases.

Dr Motwani who pioneered a technique called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) advised many patients to go for this rather than put them on drugs or advice surgery.

Andrew Hurst for the GMC told the panel that Dr Motwani's personal ambition made him biased in favor of this technique. "This case concerns the crossing of the clear line between responsible pioneer as Dr Motwani sees himself and the headstrong adventurer, where the responsible and measured practice of clinical medicine based on informed consent has on occasions been replaced by irresponsible ambition and indeed personal conceit," said Mr Hurst.

The panel heard that two patients died between 2005 and 2006 after being advised to undergo the risky procedure. Dr Motwani of Tavistock, Devon is facing 30 such allegation for treatments prescribed to 24 patients.
