Alexander Technique for Back Pain

by Rajashri on Jun 2 2009 7:22 PM

A recent study by Paul Little and colleagues at the University of Southampton has found that the Alexander technique is very useful in reliving back pain.

The study involved 579 patients with chronic or recurrent low back pain. Among them 144 were randomized to receive normal care, 147 to massage, 144 to six Alexander technique lessons, and 144 to 24 Alexander technique lessons.

Alexander technique involves avoiding harmful habits of muscle use that lead to more pain. It is not a form of exercise, rather it teaches the patient how to improve posture while standing, walking and sitting.

The researchers report that "One to one lessons in the Alexander technique from registered teachers have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain."

The details of the study appear in the British Medical Journal
