Alcohol Consumption Increases Risk of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Especially During First Trimester

Expectant mothers should avoid drinking as they can increase the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome.

A recent study has also found that the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome was highest if a pregnant woman consumed alcohol during the second half of her first trimester of pregnancy.

"The take-home message is that there's not a low threshold level below which drinking alcohol doesn't raise the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome, said study author Dr. Christina Chambers of the University of California, San Diego.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of fetal alcohol syndrome which is also physically evident in the children - abnormal head size and shape of eyes and lips indicates the presence of underlying neurological damage.
