A&E departments To Be Shut Down warns NHS chief

Sir Ian Carruthers, The NHS chief executive, has warned that acute hospitals and Action and Emergency (A&E) departments will have to shut down

Sir Ian Carruthers, The NHS chief executive, has warned that acute hospitals and Action and Emergency (A&E) departments will have to shut down , to compensate for the health services deficit of £512million. He added that some specialist departments, such as orthopaedics or oncology may be combined in fewer units.

He pointed out that this task was challenging because, the excellent results will have to be maintained along with meeting the challenge of the deficits.

Sir Ian also mentiond to the ‘Guardian’ that executives of the strategic health authority were designing local development plans which included identifying areas that require reconfiguration.
