Abortion Rules Need Change

by Rajashri on Jun 1 2009 7:56 PM

Interesting observations were made at an awareness camp organized by the Health and Family Welfare Department in Mangalore yesterday. The workshop was inaugurated by deputy commissioner V. Ponnuraj.

Most of the observations were related to implementing the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC and PNDT). According to the rules, only radiologists can perform scanning on pregnant women, but at present there were no qualified radiologists at the government hospital in the city.

Dr Shakunthala, gynaecologist at Lady Goshen Hospital, said gynaecologists must be authorised to conduct scanning in order to overcome this issue.

Dr Rathidevi of Kasturba Medical College was of the opinion that abortion laws needed a change, “Female foeticide is taking place owing to the provisions made to allow abortions up to five months of pregnancy,” she said.
