Believe it or not, a private company in Chennai has an unusual personality development programme which teaches participants or students to overcome their fear of snakes.

"Only Success Limited", the company recently held a neuro-linguistic programme that incorporated phobia-cure for self-development.

Besides teaching the participants about overcoming snake-phobias, the company also uses cockroaches, lizard and other reptiles to help people overcome their fears.

The annual programme was meant for chief executive officers, senior officials apart from employees of multi national companies.

Attended by around 60 individuals, comprising CEOs and senior officials here, the week-long programme (July 21 to 28) was a thorough experience for everyone.

During the programme, participants were asked to hold live snakes with their bare hands. Trainers were at hand to help unbind innate potential for personality development.

Suganthi, a participant, said: "I always have had a fear of snakes. I used to avoid anything to do with snakes for years. I used to have dreams about snakes. This programme has helped me in overcoming that."

Arachnophobia (fear of spiders) and Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) are most common of conditioned phobias in humans.

Established around five years ago, the Chennai-based company “Only Success Limited” has branch offices in United Arab Emitraes and the United States. It also conducts similar personality development programmes there.

Ophidiophobia or Ophiophobia refers to the fear of snakes. Fear of snakes is sometimes called by a more general term, herpetophobia, fear of reptiles.

It is one of the most common phobias, especially under the broader Zoophobia (animal phobias). Care must also be taken to differentiate people who do not like snakes or fear them for their venom or the inherent danger involved.

A typical ophidiophobic would not only fear them when in live contact but also dreads to think about them or even see them on TV or in pictures.
