Clay Butler, a Northern California entrepreneur has dreamed up the idea of soft drinks that have THC, the main psychoactive substance found in marijuana.
Cannabis is illegal when it is used for recreation, but it is permitted to be used for medicinal purposes. Butler offers this reasoning to validate his project: "I'm a firm believer that adults have an inalienable right to think, eat, smoke, drink, ingest, decorate, dress any way they choose to do so. It's your life; it's your body." Nevertheless, he claims that he has no intention of trying his own products, although he makes it accessible to others.
Scott Riddell, the founder of Diavolo Brands, which is marketing Canna Cola, is anxious that a bill in Congress would be a hurdle to Butler's project, since it proposes to double the penalties for anyone who produces a product that combines marijuana with "a candy product."
