Yemen on Saturday launched a 25-day campaign aimed at controlling the spread of malaria in the Hajja, Hodeidah and Saada provinces as part of its efforts to eradicate the disease by 2015, the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies reports.

The campaign will target about 134,000 houses in 17 districts in the three provinces, Majid al-Junaid, undersecretary of public health and population, said. Al-Junaid added that malaria is one of the government's highest health priorities.

Approximately 60% of Yemen's population is at risk of contracting malaria, according to data from the World Health Organization. There are more than 700,000 cases of malaria reported annually in the country, and there are about 15,000 deaths from the disease each year, according to WHO and the Ministry of Public Health and Population.
