World's First Womb Transplant

by Sheela Philomena on Oct 17 2011 1:15 PM

 World
Melinda Arnold is all set to become the world's first woman with a transplanted womb to fulfill her dream to be a mother.
Intensive care nurse Mel Arnold was born without the womb but with ovaries that produce eggs.

After previous unsuccessful attempts of conceiving the baby, which included using her mother and a friend as surrogates and adoption attempts, she has now resorted to the idea of receiving her mother Denise Allen's womb to conceive.

It is the last hope for her and her husband Andrew, who have been married for 12 years, to become parents.

The team led by Mats Brannstrom, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Gothenburg University in Sweden will perform the transplant in 2012.

Mel said she feared her dream of motherhood was slipping away and would never forgive herself if she did not give it a go.

"I know some people see this as risky," the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.
