US Congress Wants Obama To Condemn Taliban Ban On Girls' Education in Swat Valley

by Tanya Thomas on Mar 23 2009 10:33 AM

A new US resolution introduced in the House of Representatives has asked the Obama administration to condemn restrictions imposed on girls' education by the Taliban in the Swat region.

Introduced by Congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney, the resolution urges Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ensure that girls in Swat get access to education.

"In Swat, insurgent Taliban forces are currently imposing restrictions on girls' access to education, without any authority, and by means of force and threats of the use of force," The Nation quotes to the new resolution, as saying.

The resolution runs contrary to Pakistan's obligations under its Constitution, but has been sent to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for further action.

The non-binding resolution notes that the threat to girls' education by Taliban in Swat could spread to other parts of Pakistan, resulting in the Taliban increasing its influence in Pakistan.

During the last two years, Maulana Fazlullah led Taliban had beheaded school teachers, and bombed 191 schools in Swat, including 122 girls' schools.

Even after the implementation of Sharia-deal in Swat and Taliban's announcement that girls could go to school only under the practice of total separation from men and boys, very few girls attended the schools in the region.
