Therapeutic Health Practitioners Fear Job Risk Due to Proposed Changes in Nomenclature

by Savitha C Muppala on Jun 20 2008 6:36 PM

If the envisaged changes in the registration of therapeutic health practitioners go through, many aroma therapists, reflexologists and massage therapists may find themselves out of job. //

The Allied Health Professions Council of South //Africa (AHPCSA) has raised a request to the minister of health to make a change in the nomenclature of such professions, such that the word "therapeutic" is done way with. Following such a change, people in professions of aromatherapy, massage therapy and reflexology will be referred to as practitioners. They will also need to register at the health council.

Tracy Chambers of the SA Association of Health and Skincare Professionals said that the proposed changes would impact the complete industry. Those who aspire to practice reflexology or aromatherapy will need to adhere to the stipulations of the council.
