The Sex That Feels Guilty About One-night Stands

by Savitha C Muppala on Jun 26 2008 5:38 PM

A study published in the ‘Human Nature’ magazine has revealed the stark difference in the way men and women feel about one night stands. Men actually feel elated while women feel sad and guilty, the study revealed. 80% of men felt casual sex is good to have as against 54% of women.

This may also be a pointer to men about the need to hone their negotiating and convincing skills and if one can say the skills to lie in order to entice a woman to bed.

On the contrary, women never encouraged casual sex, unless the relationship carried the potential of a long term partnership. According to Professor Anne Campbell, despite the sexual revolution of the 1960s, women’s attitude towards casual relationships remained unchanged.

Men also felt more confident after one night stands that improved their sense of well-being. Further, men were happy to share such information with their friends. On the contrary, women felt used and disappointed with themselves for indulging in this activity. They also were concerned about their image among friends and preferred to protect their reputation.

The study concluded that most women did not believe in sex in a relationship that had no future. Prof Campbell said, "In evolutionary terms women bear the brunt of parental care and it has been generally thought that it was to their advantage to choose their mate carefully and remain faithful to make sure that their mate had no reason to believe he was raising another man's child. Recently biologists have suggested that females could benefit from mating with many men - it would increase the genetic diversity of their children and, if a high quality man would not stay with them forever, they might at least get his excellent genes for their child."
