Sue Townsend Receives Life-saving Kidney from Son

by Rajshri on Dec 28 2009 9:18 PM

Author of the best selling Adrian Mole series, Sue Townsend underwent a major kidney transplant surgery after waiting for two years to receive the organ.

The 63-year old writer is suffering from Type 1 diabetes for the past three decades and has been on dialysis in the last few years. Townsend had applied for an organ donation but her condition deteriorated after waiting unsuccessfully for the last two years.

Her family carried out tests to find an exact match among themselves. Her eldest son, Sean, was chosen as the best match and the operation was carried out at Leicester General Hospital in September.

Complications arose during the surgery as the doctors failed to implant the organ on the first attempt. Even after the surgery, Townsend made 17 more trips to the hospitals after an infection developed.

Speaking about the surgery Townsend said, “I had got down to about five per cent function. Behind my back, the family got together and decided that one would donate one of their own.”
