Software may Predict Pre-term Birth

by Rajashri on Sep 5 2008 3:03 PM

University of Melbourne engineers have developed a software that can predict premature births. This same software is also used for assessing the risk of cyclones and nuclear accidents.

University of Newcastle's Professor Roger Smith said the software will be used to analyze the blood hormone levels that may be able to indicate a pregnancy that has been compromised.

"The mechanisms that regulate the onset of human labour are still unknown, which makes it difficult to predict the event," Prof Smith said. "The program will provide obstetricians with a trajectory for a woman's pregnancy."

Engineer Professor David Smith said the software had the capability to produce detailed results.
