by Rajashri on Aug 13 2008 2:40 PM

A dead snail found in a dish at the SSKM hospital in Kolkata has created a furor with many patients refusing to eat their dinner after the incident.

The snail was found in the dinner of a man named Shibu Datta admitted in the male ward of the hospital.

“We were scared to find a dead and decomposed snail in the food. A foul smell was also coming out of it, I immediately took the food to the nurses but they paid little heed. I then went to the ward boys who too refused to change the food and told me to complain in the kitchen instead,” said Mr Sanjoy Dutta, the patient's brother.

Following this other patients protested and refused to eat their dinner. The hospital authorities have ordered a probe into the incident.

“I was informed about the incident this morning. It is both unfortunate and undesirable. The food which is served to the patients is prepared by a private agency and I will take up the matter with them,” said Dr Ashok Kumar Ghosh, superintendent of SSKM hospital.
