A report released by he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that many U.S. babies are being born with syphilis. These babies are born to women who are users of crack cocaine and who work in the sex trade

This is an alarming statistic because prior to this report there was a 14-year decline in the incidence of syphilis. However the disease has made a comeback in a big way and is now rampant among gay men.

There was a 63% increase in the incidence of syphilis among men who had sex with men. Syphilis is caused by the Treponema pallidum bacteria and is a sexually transmitted disease that does not show any symptoms till it is very late.

"After declining for 14 years, the congenital syphilis rate among infants aged under 1 year increased 23 percent, from 8.2 cases per 100,000 live births in 2005 to 10.1 during 2008," the CDC team reported. "That increase followed a 38 percent increase in the ... syphilis rate among females aged more than 10 years from 2004 to 2007."
