PM to Convene NDC Meet to Discuss Healthcare

Focussing on healthcare needs of the country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will convene a special meeting of the National Development Council (NDC) to discuss disease control and public health.

At a meeting here Tuesday to review the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), he asked state governments to pay adequate attention to healthcare issues and ensure efficient functioning of public health services, according to an official release.

The prime minister said there was need for greater investment in medical education, including nursing, especially in states where there is an acute shortage of seats in nursing and medicine institutes.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ambumani Ramadoss gave a detailed outline of the action taken so far and identified three categories of states in terms of the implementation of the NRHM.

The best performing states were Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Tripura, according to the release.

The average performing states were Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Punjab and Uttarakhand.

The states which have so far not performed well in the implementation of NRHM programmes are Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh.
