Outrage After Error in Screening Breast Cancer
An error in the breast cancer screening service was found in a hospital in the Carlisle after it was revealed that eight women were given all clear only to be brought back to the hospital for treatment.
More than 1600 women have taken test at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle since April 2007 with 130 of them being recalled to undergo the test for a second time. So far over 49 women have taken the test for a second time with eight of them testing positive for breast cancer with experts suggesting that the number would rise further.

Apologizing for the mix up, Carole Heatly, chief executive of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust said, “Our trust fully understands and appreciates the distress and anxiety this issue will have caused and apologises to all concerned. We are undertaking every measure possible to ensure that we provide the best high-quality service.”
